Skip this step for Sakai-related sites.
- Go to https://rulink.rutgers.edu/admin
- After login, choose "manage domains"
- Next to ldap.rutgers.edu choose "manage lists"
- Decide on a group name. Obviously it should be one that does not exist. Using the short name of the iTunes site is often a good idea.
- Create two groups, one starting "admin@", and the other group starting "user@" (maintain and access can also be used, if this is preferable).
E.g. admin@public-lectures and user@public-lectures. Avoid special characters in the name, although '-' and '_' will definitely work, as well as a space. - To create a group use "create list in this domain."
Put the group name, e.g. "admin@public-lectures" in the blank.
Note: The system will add @ldap.rutgers.edu to the end. Do not type when entering. - Go into "manage members" for each group.
- Add the people who are going to manage the group (usually the person making the request) to both groups as owners:
Click "owners" and type the NetIDs in the spaces provided. Also add each member as an internal member.
- Login to the top level of iTunes. The easiest approach is https://rulink.rutgers.edu/itunesu/itunesu.jsp. If you don't have rights to edit it, you end up with an error from inside iTunes. When you call that page with no arguments it takes you to the top level iTunes U site.
- Click on the section where you want to create the course, (e.g. Sakai for sakai-based courses).
If you slect 'Edit page' without clicking on a section, edits will be made to elements at the top level. - To create a new section, choose ' Edit Page', 'Create Page' and then choose template 'Default Welcome Page'.)
- From within the appropriate section, choose 'Edit page'.
- 'Create Page', from template default course
- Fill in the Title. This is all that is needed. For non-Sakai courses you might want to add the group name as the short name.
- Once the course is created, click on the course name to enter it.
- Choose 'Edit access'. This must be done from within the course, or edits will be made for the whole section.
- Choose '+' next to Credentials.
- Repeat 2 or 3 times, creating 2 or 3 different credentials (three are needed for Sakai course sites because of Teaching Assistant).
The first should be set to 'Edit', the second to 'Download'.
For Sakai, the credentials look like this:
access@urn:mace:itunesu.com:sites:rutgers.edu:sakai:f9e74eba-b5a2-4fa0-8058-179e07d35772The last part is the site ID. The first part is the role. It is typically maintain and access or Instructor, Student and Teaching Assistant. It must match precisely the role names in Sakai.
For non-Sakai sites, the credentials look like this:
admin@urn:mace:itunesu.com:sites:rutgers.edu:ldap:testThis corresponds to the LDAP group admin@test. The thing before the @ must be the same for the credential and the LDAP group. The thing after the : in the credential must match the thing after the @ in the LDAP group.
Finding the URL
Our documentation claims that we will give the site owner the URL of their site.
Once you have created the site within iTunes, go to the site. Now near the top of iTunes, you'll see a navigation bar giving your name@Rutgers University and then the hierarchy of site names. Drag the name of the site into the address bar of a browser. That will give you the URL for the site. For IE you'll have to drag it to a position somewhat above the address bar for it to work. The result is a URL that looks like
https://deimos.apple.com/WebObjects/Core.woa/BrowsePrivately/rutgers.edu.118689If the site is not associated with Sakai, give them that URL.
If the site is associated with sakai, the URL looks like
https://sakai.rutgers.edu/itunesu.jsp?ssite=f9e74eba-b5a2-4fa0-8058-179e07d35772&site=rutgers.edu.118689where ssite= is the sakai site ID -- the long thing that appears after /site/ in the URLs -- and site= is the iTunesU site id -- rutgers.edu.nnnn. Get the iTunesU site id from the URL above. In that example it would be rutgers.edu.118689. Note that sites falling within a section have two levels, e.g. rutgers.edu.18689.2346789
NOTE: Access to rosters outside of Sakai is currently not operational. No one was using it, and fixing it is going to be sort of a pain. If you need this, send email to hedrick@rutgers.edu
If faculty want to give access by roster, but they don't want to use Sakai, they're going to have two URLs. One is the normal deimos.apple.com URL. That is for people who access the site by group. That is, it is anyone who is added manually through LDAP. Normally the instructor, TAs and students not on the roster. For students on the roster, you need to do two things:
- The faculty (or you for the faculty) needs to add an additional credential of the form
student@urn:mace:itunesu.com:sites:rutgers.edu:course:2006:9:01:198:111:01
- Students who are on the roster need to access the site by a special URL:
https://rulink.rutgers.edu/itunesu/itunesu.jsp?site=rutgers.edu.1204962155&course=2006:9:01:198:111:01
where site= is the iTunes site ID and course is the course number used to construct the credential. It's perfectly OK to add several courses or sections to one iTunes site. Just add multiple credentials. However students will need to access it by a special URL with course= matching the course they are in. (If this becomes a problem I'll modify the program that accept multiple courses.)
